FERS is based on the rules of chess, but with some differences, the most important are four:
The first difference is that the Fers board boxes are not black or white, can be of different colors, white, green, yellow, red and blue and before starting the game, can change it's position.
The second is that all piece are equal, with respect to the game, all of them are pawns but depending on the color of the box in which they are, they become a different figure, that is a knight, a queen, a bishop or a rook and move as such.
The third important difference is that the position of the squares of colors may be different, so we always play in different panels, now play in chess boards of 64 squares, but replace the black squares by color boxes. Players can configure, alternatively their half of the board, as a strategy to start the game.
The fourth is that each player decide which of his pawns is the leader, (the King), the game ends when convinced (we checkmate) the opposite Leader.
The other difference is: The movement of the knight has one more movement instead of 1 +2 is 1 +3 or 2 +2, there is no castling, no eating out at a walk and at starting the pawns can`t move two spaces.
